An Universal Upper Roller Bending Machine is a powerful and versatile three-roll bending machine. It gets its name from its unique working method: the upper roll can perform two main types of movement: vertical lifting/lowering and horizontal tilting (commonly known as "tilting"). This design gives it exceptional flexibility and precision in rolling circular, curved cylindrical shells, and conical shells, making it one of the core pieces of equipment in metal plate rolling processes.
Core Working Principles & Characteristics
Unlike ordinary symmetrical three-roll bending machines, the core characteristic of the Upper Roll Universal type lies in the independent control of its upper roll's two ends.
Vertical Lifting/Lowering (Main Pressing):
The upper roll moves vertically downward as a whole, driven by hydraulic cylinders, applying pressure to the plate positioned above the lower rolls. This is the initial and primary forming action for rolling arcs.
Horizontal Tilting (Tilt Adjustment):
This is the essence of its "universal" functionality. The two ends (left and right) of the upper roll can be raised or lowered independently with different strokes. By having one end descend more than the other, the upper roll forms an angle with the horizontal plane.
This tilting function is key to achieving the rolling of conical shells (with different end diameters). By precisely controlling the displacement at each end, the wide side (large end) of the plate can be given a larger bending radius, and the narrow side (small end) a smaller bending radius, thus enabling the rolling of precise conical sections.
Lower Roll Drive:
The two lower rolls are the driven rolls, synchronized and rotated by a motor. They drive the plate back and forth via friction between the upper and lower rolls, cooperating with the pressure from the upper roll to achieve continuous bending and forming.
Main Work Process (Using Cylinder Rolling as an Example)
Pre-bending (Eliminating Straight Ends):
This is a crucial preliminary step for rolling perfect cylindrical shells on a three-roll bending machine. Utilizing the tilting function of the upper roll, one end is pressed down forcefully while the other end is raised, progressively bending the edge portions of both ends of the plate to eliminate the "straight ends" or "unbent edges" that otherwise cannot be bent. This is a significant advantage of the Upper Roll Universal machine over ordinary symmetrical three-roll machines, as it can perform pre-bending on the same equipment, whereas ordinary three-roll machines often require a separate pre-bending process.
Rolling/Cylindrical Forming:
After pre-bending is completed, the upper roll is adjusted back to a horizontal position.
The upper roll descends as a whole, applying pressure to the plate. Simultaneously, the two lower rolls rotate synchronously, driving the plate in multiple passes (back and forth). The upper roll progressively feeds downward step-by-step until the plate is rolled into a cylindrical shell of the required diameter.
Rounding/Calibration:
When close to the target diameter, the cylinder is rolled several more times between the rolls to eliminate overall ovality (out-of-roundness) and make the cylindrical shape more regular and precise.

Main Advantages
Powerful Functionality:
Versatile Machine: Capable of rolling cylindrical shells, curved sections, and conical shells.
No Separate Pre-bending Equipment: Possesses its own capability for plate edge pre-bending, eliminating the need for additional equipment and processes.
High Precision:
When equipped with a CNC system, it can precisely control the displacement of both ends of the upper roll and the rotation of the lower rolls, resulting in high rolling accuracy and good repeatability.
High Degree of Automation:
In modern CNC-type Upper Roll Universal Plate Bending Machines, the operator only needs to input the plate parameters (thickness, width, material) and the target shape (diameter, cone angle). The machine can then automatically calculate and execute the entire rolling process.
Excellent Forming Quality:
Due to the elimination of straight end issues and precise control over the bending process, the workpieces exhibit high forming quality and accurate geometry.
Typical Application Fields
Upper Roll Universal Plate Bending Machines are widely used in industries that require the processing of cylindrical shells with complex curvatures, such as:
Boiler and Pressure Vessel Manufacturing: Rolling boiler drums, pressure tanks, etc.
Chemical and Petrochemical Equipment: Manufacturing various reactors, towers, large-diameter pipes.
Wind Power Industry: Rolling towers for wind turbines.
Shipbuilding: Bending hull plates and shells.
Heavy Machinery and Steel Structures: Manufacturing large silos, hoppers, penstocks for hydropower stations, etc.
In summary, the Universal Upper Roller Bending Machine represents a high-end solution in plate rolling technology. Through the unique vertical and tilting movements of its upper roll, it perfectly addresses the two major challenges in shell rolling: pre-bending and conical forming. While ensuring high precision, it greatly expands the processing range. For medium and large-sized enterprises that frequently handle various types of cylindrical shell rolling tasks, it is an indispensable, efficient, and versatile core asset.
