NW HENGYI METAL recently completed a project for a cathodic protection application in a soil environment, where the customer specified an iridium-tantalum coating at 5μm—a specification that sits at the higher end of the typical range for MMO anodes in this industry.
Understanding Coating Thickness in Cathodic Protection
In standard cathodic protection applications, MMO anode coating thickness typically ranges from 2μm to 10μm. A 5μm specification is considered higher-end, often selected for projects that demand higher current density or more challenging service conditions.
Thickness Is Not the Whole Story
While a thicker coating can contribute to longer service life, its performance ultimately depends on one critical factor: adhesion. If the bond between the coating and titanium substrate is not robust, a thicker coating can actually increase the risk of delamination and premature failure.
This is why our R&D team—led by a PhD in electrochemistry—places equal emphasis on process control and adhesion testing, alongside thickness consistency. Coating formulation, application technique, and substrate preparation are all essential to achieving reliable, long-lasting anodes.
Meeting Precise Specifications While Controlling Costs
When a customer specifies a precise coating thickness—particularly a higher-end spec like 5μm—we focus on two priorities:
We also welcome third-party verification. For this project, the customer plans to conduct independent lab testing to verify both coating thickness and material composition—a process we fully support.
